Reconnecting River Country Program - What you need to know

The NSW Government has launched the Reconnecting River Country Program under the Water Management (General) Regulation Landholder Negotiation Scheme Order (No. 1) 2025.

Under the program, maximum flow rates are set to increase from 22,000 ML to 45,000 ML—a major shift that will affect landholders along the Murrumbidgee River. While these higher flows won’t commence until after 2031, planning and negotiations are already underway.

The Government is inviting landholders to negotiate compensation where properties will be substantially impacted. Phase One of negotiations will focus on landholders between Darlington Point and Balranald, running from now through to December 2026. Initial contact will be made by phone, followed by formal meetings.

If you’re approached to negotiate or sign agreements, or if you believe you will be impacted, it’s critical to understand and protect your rights and secure the best possible outcome. At Regional Business Lawyers, we specialise in guiding landholders through these complex negotiations. If you or someone you know is impacted, contact us today for expert advice and peace of mind.
